Jason, New Hampshire, USA

“Well I’m from southern New Hampshire, and my parents would bring us up here all the time to go to the Flume and the Basin. We never did any hardcore backpacking but it definitely planted the seed. Then, in high school, a bunch of my friends were in Boy Scouts and their dads would take us out hiking. One time we hiked Mount Washington. After we finished, I thought, “The only problem with doing all these hikes is that we have to trudge back down the same trail we came up for four hours.” And I just wanted to keep going and see new stuff, and my friend’s dad said, “You do realize that you can hike from right where we’re standing all the way to Georgia right?” I was just like, “Well, when can I do that?” And that was it — I hiked the Appalachian Trail after that.”
