“I like the sense of accomplishment. Being out in nature, the reward of standing on Franconia Ridge and looking at all that scenery. I started “the 48” [climbing all 48 4000-foot peaks in NH] to say I did the 48, and then I went on to do the “New England 67”, and then I was done with the lists. Then I saw the “Terrifying 25”, so I changed my mind. It just fun. I started hiking about five years ago. I needed to get out and do something, I was sitting at home doing housework, a lot of gardening… I’m a trained master gardener from the extension service from UConn. Then one day, someone mentioned hiking, so I joined AMC, and got a backpack. And it was so bad. It had no waist belt, just straps. But I learned and I got better and better. I think back on how scared I used to be, and now the stuff that i’ve done — it’s world of difference. The people that I hike with in meetup groups and stuff are 20 years younger than I am, and I’m still keeping up with them. My daughters hike with me too, and they love that I’m active and staying healthy. I do this for me.  It’s my passion and I’m just going to keep doing it.”
